| This lighthouse is actually the third to stand on this offshore island 3 miles west of Charleston. Two previous lighthouses were builtthe first in 1866, and the second in 1909. Both eroded into the ocean as the island changed shape from the constant battering of the waves.
The present lighthouse was built in 1934 and was automated in 1966. The tower is 44 feet tall and is situated 100 feet above the water. The beacon from the lighthouse can be seen more than 20 miles out to sea.
Although the lighthouse is closed to the public, good views can be seen from Sunset Bay State Park.
